You wouldn’t be alone if you’ve been wondering why you’re hearing more about AI lately. AI, such as chatbots, are becoming not just more common but exceptionally good. In recent weeks, ChatGPT has been making headlines with its ability to answer complex and specific questions. For example, you could ask ChatGPT to write you a paper on AI’s impact on the human race, and you’d get a comprehensive answer. ChatGPT is only one example of AI. We’ve been using advanced artificial intelligence for quite some time, think Google maps, social media and face recognition. So why are more people talking about it now? The reason is, AI is becoming more and more integrated into the workplace. Companies are using AI to solve problems, fill gaps and absorb admin tasks – just to name a few of its functions.
So, the question is, should you be worried about your job? No! AI is a tool, a resource that can assist and improve operations. Of course, we can’t predict how smart technology will become and how that will impact specific industries, but we do know at the moment, AI should be and can be working for you – not against you.
How to make AI work in your favour:
- Learn about AI: The best first step you can take is to learn. Read about the various chatbots out there, and search your industry for what AI is currently being used. Get familiar with the platforms and programs. Others will value your insight and knowledge, especially when so much tech is new and not fully understood.
- Identify the gaps: Once you know what AI is used in your industry/sector, look at your current role. Are there opportunities to use AI? Could you use it in your workplace? For example, there is technology that can use algorithms to predict issues in telecommunications systems. – clever! Incorporating this knowledge into your role may mean you can do your job even better. Of course, bringing AI on board may not be up to you. You can always share your findings with your manager and discuss the opportunities. At the very least, they will appreciate your commitment to improving operations.
- Use your skills: Technology is powerful, but humans even more so. While platforms, bots and programs may be able to perform some pretty impressive tasks, there is no substitute for human processing, analysis and experience. A computer may be able to write an article for you, but it can’t add your voice, personal experience, humour, conclusions or insights. All that good stuff that helps us connect and relate to one another.
